What a strange selection of people to all agree with each other.

and they are, of course, right.

Iran is the lesser of two evils. It kidnapped a building full of Americans in 1979. Saudi Arabia has financially enabled the death of thousands of Americans over the past two decades.

Just a thought:

Imagine the progress we could've made had we sided with the Pan-Arab Nationalists instead of Israel in the 1950's-70's.

Ugh.

I don't think one answer is "liberal" or "conservative" ... Both of these countries' regimes suck.

Even if they'd gone through a nasty "Cultural Revolution" phase, a somewhat less authoritarian, Arab equivalent of the People's Republic of China would be better for the average Middle Easterner compared to their current choices of Sectarian Failed State or Highly Oppressive and Superstitious Rentier Gerontocracy.

there are always these woulda-coulda-shouldas in history.  as a man born in 1990, I've only known a unipolar world.   the idea that the US-NATO bloc was dead scared of the Soviet model in the 50s and 60s, with bourgeois economists projecting Russian living standards would surpass the US by 2000, is nearly impossible for me to wrap my head around.  when Khrushhev said "history is on our side, we will attend your funeral", it wasn't reducible to simple jingoistic rhetoric.  the Soviets believed it, and the at least a few American bureaucrats did, too.

Saudi Arabia, since they aren't as blatantly and rabidly anti-American.
