From The Baltimore Sun

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman gave Baltimore County Republicans a roadmap last night for expanding the Maryland GOP into the state's dominant party.

The Pikesville native, who ran President Bush's re-election campaign, said that if the Maryland [Republican] party can turn out just 75 percent of the people who voted for Bush last year, it will sweep the Democrats out of power in 2006.

"We'll re-elect Bob Ehrlich, we'll elect a Republican [U.S.] senator and we won't just have a veto-proof majority in the State House. Bob Ehrlich's agenda will be the law of the land," Mehlman said.

Considering that Ken Mehlman was the primary architect behind Bush's grass-roots campaign in 2004, I doubt he would be on drugs.   Who knows, though.  Smiley

Still, this comment doesn't make any sense to me either.  Frankly, I really can't find any way it makes any logical sense from any angle.  Maybe he meant turning out 75% of registered Republicans in the state (since turnout was one of his big goals in 2004).  That at least makes some numerical sense in this highly Democrat-registered state still.

But then again this is the Baltimore Sun, so maybe the strangeness of the comments comes the lack of writing skills that this paper often displays.

Ken Mehlman is not on drugs, but he'd better bring his lunch if he wants to turn Maryland Republican.  Thats about like saying Massachusetts or New York will produce a very conservative Republican in 2008 or that Utah and Idaho will produce a very liberal Democrat.  Oklahoma has a better chance of going Democrat than Maryland has of going Republican.

The point is off year elections  have poor turnout,  so if you mobilze your base you can win.
However, Mehlman's math is poor, if 75% of the Republicans from 2004 vote, for the Republicans to win that would require that only 32% of the Kerry voters turn out.

Unless Mehlman knows something that we don't about continental drift and the City of Baltimore, no.

He's also not taking into account the awesome gerrymander the Democrats have.

The idea of the GOP taking the Maryland legislature is also asinine. The idea that they could have a veto-proof majority is bandit-territory.

He also failed to realize that in 2006, Maryland will have an open Senate race for the first time in, what, 20 years?  On top of that we will have a highly controversial and highly exposed Gubernatorial race. Turnout will be lower than 2004, obviously, but not as low as most midterm elections.

The part that made me laugh was the 2/3 Republican majority in the state Senate.  The first 2 (Governor and U.S. Senate) are in the realm of possibilities.  But for the Republicans to go from 1/3 to 2/3 in the state Senate in one election year is totally ridiculous.
