The 2012 Republican nominee for president leads a broad field of GOP potential contenders in the Townhall/Gravis poll conducted Jan. 5-7 among 404 registered Republican voters queried.

Carson was a close second place in the most recent Iowa poll, and they don't even include him here.

This is Scott Walker's best showing yet, no? I feel like he is a good dark horse candidate to win Iowa. If Rand Paul can steal NH, this could be quite fun with virtual home states next up on the docket. (FL: Jeb Bush; MI,NV,UT: Romney; SC: technically Graham, but Huck will be favored. The only other one is NY if it is indeed quite early where Christie could find a niche.)

As fun as all that would be to watch, I sort of hope it doesn't happen for Paul's sake because libertarian states are at the very end. Plus, Christie will find no supporters outside the Mid-Atlantic. My 3rd choice in Walker might have a shot, but he'd very likely be short of Romney and Huckabee in delegates unless Romney really struggles to take the establishment from Jeb.

Still, the early upsets would be real neat. Iowa wouldn't be completely unexpected either and even NH can be somewhat anti-establishment.

Obviously Gravis is pretty terrible, but we have only one year to make crazy projections still. Might as well make the most of it.

This is Scott Walker's best showing yet, no?

He also got 10% in the Reuters/Ipsos poll of Iowa in October:

I'm about this close to putting a Romney 16 sticker in my sig. I'm 90% sure it'd be ironic, but I'm a bit worried that that's not 100%.

It will rise exponentially once Romney declares

Or it will decline sharply. His leads in Iowa have always been thin, and he did even worse in 2012 than he did in 2008 in terms of number of votes and percentage, he just happened to be in a more crowded field. Once voters get a look at Mitt Romney, they will realize why they were so hesitant to nominate him in the first place.

I think "Uncertain" would make the best GOP nominee.

Any chance NOTA can win the Republican primary, like it happened in the most recent Democratic gubernatorial primary in Nevada?

In all seriousness, politics won't be the same without Mitt Romney. He totally needs to run.

Romney will implode well before Iowa. His lead is mostly name recognition.

Careful, Lief. This could be the campaign where they finally ban us.
