Yeah, that's a pretty stupid explanation. Was Iceland colder at the time, since its name is Iceland?

But this makes him not "sane"? lol

Yes, Climate has been changing pretty regularly throughout time, and those that say that the present climate change is 100% human-caused are idiotic. But to say that Greenland was named Greenland because "oh, it has a bunch of grass! yahoo!" is just silly.

As long as this was a "check to make sure they're not part of any terrorist group, but otherwise treat them the same" sort of thing, rather than a "pursue every possible avenue to keep them out of the country because Arabs suck!" sort of thing, I don't really see a problem here.

And no, Kirk is not some "insane radical".

In the first quote, he's wrong, but I've heard it said before so its one of those common misconceptions.  I'd like our elected representatives to be better informed, but whatever.  It is true that climate varies by quite a lot for natural reasons.

The idea of looking closer at immigrants from high risk countries is pretty reasonable given that it's implemented as a way to weed out dangerous individuals and not as a way to make it more difficult for everyone from those countries to immigrate.

The part of Greenland the Vikings settled in was green. It was a marketing ploy to call it Greenland, but it wasn't a total lie.  And it was at the beginning of the period known as the Little Optimum. If the implication is that everywhere we see ice in Greenland today it used to be green, that's completely incorrect. There are green areas of Greenland today, and during the Little Optimum these green areas were more expansive than today, and much more expansive than during the Little Ice Age that followed.

The Norse landed at Iceland over a hundred years before, before the Little Optimum, and the name described the icy fjords.

And no, Kirk is not some "insane radical".

But ... but ... he's a Republican. To many of the commenters here anyone to the right of Elizabeth Warren is an "insane radical". Because justice and equality and puppies.

Yes, Kirk is a member of an insane radical right-wing political party. Which explains his insane commentary on Greenland, his radical support for racial profiling, etc.

Anyone sane who tries to run for office as a Republican will be immediately targeted for elimination by the deranged base of that party.

Yes, Climate has been changing pretty regularly throughout time, and those that say that the present climate change is 100% human-caused are idiotic. But to say that Greenland was named Greenland because "oh, it has a bunch of grass! yahoo!" is just silly.

You can not just assume that the natural changes are going in the same direction as human made climate change. The opposite pattern with natural swings countering the effect of global warming is a possibility. It is a complex matter.

Greenland was actually named Greenland because it had "a bunch of grass" - in the wide valleys of Southern Greenland. The grassing for sheep and cattle was far better than in barren Northern Iceland where Eric the Red and his men came from, so it was comparatively a green land.

Nuuk and the Icelandic capital Reykjavik (on the south coast of Iceland) are located equally north. The entire Southern Greenland is to the south of Iceland and the Norse sailed SW in search of better land. It was warmer back then, but the difference is getting smaller. It is one of the few areas of the world unequivocally benefitting from global warming with a rising agricultural sector. Sheep farming has already been big up there since the 1920s, but now cattle farming is starting up for the first time since the Norse died out. They are growing cabbage, potatoes, flowers etc. Greenland is a big place and the the southern tip is on the same latitude as Oslo and the Shetland Islands - no polar bears and sledge dogs down there.

Short documentary on the rise of the agricultural sector:

As shua said, it is an error of summation. Considering, he is a politician who has to deal in short statements it is hardly an indication of insanity, merely that politics necessitates the dumming down of complex information so that it can fit into a statement like this.

When you summarize in history is when you begin to run into problems, often innocent ones, but problems nonetheless. This was even in some of our text books if I recall correctly.

Also profiling based on origin in 2005 would have seemed to make a lot of sense "back in 2005". And it is not like they were being barred from entry, just given more scrutiny. Now of course with ISIS, the rules have changed with a greater proportion of citizens from Europe and even North America being members of the group that may seek to come back here.

This is a bit dramatic, but totally true. Honestly, there is no debate about anthropogenic climate change, whether homosexuality is something that people can "help," or whether or not Iraq had WMDs. However, if you talk to a GOP politico, these seem to be controversial issues. Hence, all people espousing them have to either be deluded about FACTS, scientific, peer-reviewed FACTs, or taking advantage of other peoples' delusions to win election.

Also, once the Duckworth campaign (or whoever it is, my money's on her though) gets this info and makes it into sound bites, Mark Kirk moderate statesman is going to take a real hit. I think this guy is probably toast so long as Ds don't nominate Pat Quinn.

As genuinely as I dislike hackery and want to concede the opposition have points; Climate change denial is way over the line. I would never ever support a denier, and those that have the tenacity to deny Climate Change in office should not be entitled to think of themselves as moderates.

There's no way he'll be "Blanched", more likely he'll be "Begiched".
