I grew up in an upper middle-class suburban area and almost no boys had birthday parties after age 12 or so (or if they did, they certainly weren't facilitated by their parents). Only popular girls did that.

My stepdad hit me but I don't think that was normal for people in my neighborhood, he was just a violent man. Finally when I was 16 and had been working out I just snapped and beat the sh**t out of him. He never hit me again and we've never discussed it.
