If the 2016 Dem primary is a snooze fest, many voters will be tempted to vote in the Republican primary for a candidate like Cruz or Santorum. I remember Rush Limbaugh claiming credit for a campaign like this against Dems in 2004 or 2008.

Will this happen and will it have an impact on the race?

Did it happen in '08? Nope (though it can be argued mildly in Iowa it did). It never gets mobilized enough as much as the other party always wants it to.

What I think Limbaugh claimed credit for in 2008 was convincing Republicans to keep Hillary alive and attacking Obama after McCain sealed the deal.

This goes back to at least 1996, when Democrats supposedly voted en masse for Pat Buchanan.

While I have always doubted the effect of party switching dirty tricks, there is certainly a draw to the more contested contest for the 20 open primary states (which include both NH and SC). Independents can play a big role in those states.

All of the Republicans are awful, so it'd be best to try to get a non awful Democrat.

Michigan Democrats rushed to the polls to cast their vote for John McCain in the 2000 Republican Presidential Primary, because John Engler made a very public promise to George W. Bush that he would win the Michigan primary. Many Michigan Democrats cast their vote for Rick Santorum in the 2012 Primary, to throw a wrench in the process.

If the Democratic field is Hildog and a bunch of non-contenders, you can bet that I'll be casting my vote in the GOP primary.

What Democrat would satisfy your (rather unshared) political beliefs?
