I remember having a nightly prayer in boot camp.  The U.S. military is a traditional thing.

This must be somewhere in the South.  Just like any corporation, you have to tailor your marketing to your regional market.

Edit:  *clicks on link*  Hmm, it was in Phoenix.  Well, you've got crazy right-wingers and superstitious Hispanics there, so it all works.

Are they recruiting people for the Army or the Blues Brothers?

Oddly, while Arizona is very conservative in its political culture,  it's not really part of the Bible Belt. It's closer to the Mormon Belt, if anything.

EDIT: Saw your edit.

"for god and country" is the official motto of the US Army Chaplains corps. Maybe they are recruiting more chaplains.

Military religious culture (or religious military culture) is unnerving.

How would you react if you saw, say, a military recruiting poster in Tehran calling on young Iranians to "Take up arms for Allah"?

Given that the country is a theocracy....I would say its probably a good recruiting tool.

I'm sick of paying for America's religious wars.

The wars we've been in recently are definitely not "Missions for God."

America has always had a comfortable relationship with her government and religion. This is just nationalism at work here; and almost every country has some sort of relationship between God and their country. This is not unique or noteworthy. This is pretty common and laudable; in the sense God and cultural values are being used to a positive end; enlisting in the U.S. military in service of the country.

It wouldn't be the first time US policy completely flies in the face of the Establishment Clause. "In God we trust", anyone?

Turns out that the poster was something the local recruiting office cooked up using a stock photo.  It's been axed.

That's what one would expect in Iran. This is not Iran.
