from the standpoint of national elections, it's amazing how long it's taken. OK hasn't voted for a Democrat for President since 1964, and hasn't voted more Democrat than the US as a whole since 1956 (including Humphrey+Wallace in '68). They haven't voted for a Democratic Senator since 1990.

Wow, I didn't realize Democrats outnumbered Republicans in the state. I thought it was close, but that Republicans had an edge. That's a LOT of DINOs

This is surprising since OK hasn't been reliably Democratic since the new deal era.

It looks like even in the past, the state was full of Democrats who voted for Nixon over JFK, for Ford, etc.

South Carolina doesn't have more registered Republicans than Democrats.  Of course, that's because we don't have party registration.

Fred Harris was a Dixiecrat? The Dixiecratic party wasn't even on the ballot in Oklahoma in 1948, so technically there are no Dixiecrats there.

It's obviously refereeing to conservative Democrats that regularly votes Republican, not to all (especially past) Democrats from the region and not to a short-lived 1948 party, as "Dixiecrat" is being used in wider context than that.

I am surprised it took this long, this seems like the kind of story we would've seen 10 years ago.

Oklahoma has voted GOP on the Presidential level every election since 1952 except 1964, and has been getting progressively less Democratic on the statewide level since the 1990s and before.

Good.  The sooner Democrats are completely separated from their Southern roots the better.

Yes.  It's especially true that the sooner Democrats shed the Sooner "Democrats" of Oklahoma the better.

Good. All the fake Democrats who vote straight ticket Republican for everything (even local races) need to GTFO. I'm tired of them giving ammunition to Oldies too.

The responses in this thread are a perfect case study for why arrogant liberals can't win the votes of "working class Whites."

I thought you WANTED these people to be Democrats...

And yeah, I'm sure some random people in Oklahoma (besides Bushie) care what posters on uselectionatlas.org say and base their votes around it. It's not like Democratic politicians say the kind of stuff in this thread.

I wonder if the SoS has historical data to see where the biggest shifts over time have been.

It looks like the relative strength of the parties is basically what it always has been in OK (a vaguely diagonal line separating the Republican northern/western half from the Democratic southern/eastern half). I'm guessing rural Oklahoma's population has been stagnating or falling over time and most of the state's growth has been in the very Republican OKC and Tulsa areas.
