it just seems that Indiana is different than the states it borders in the sense that north=more dem and south=more republican. There are some dark red parts of the state and for a mid-sized city, Fort Wayne is pretty conservative. IN-3 (old IN-4) often goes heavily republican and gave Bush 68-69% in 04 and even Murdock got 57% in 2012. The district's congressman, Marlin Stutzman, seems to be a Broun/Gohmert type, with his only saving grace being that he keeps his mouth shut mostly.

Well NW Ohio borders NE Indiana and NW Ohio is conservative. Other than that I don't have an answer to your question.

Doesn't northeastern Indiana have a lot of religious conservatives? Remember, western Michigan is pretty conservative too.

Most don't vote, but the ones who do generally vote Republican.

Yeah, and having been to the area on a vacation, the Amish culture is a huge part of the life for the non-Amish.  They have a bunch of tourism based on the fact that they're "Amish country."  You see tourist slogans like "Elkhart County - Old Fashioned Values" and "Cozy.  Just like Home."   There is a strong sense of nostalgia when you go there, and the label "old-fashioned" is used everywhere there.  The area really lends itself to strong social conservatism, and as Thomas mentioned, the Amish themselves are deeply conservative.

And in some of these counties the percentage speaking Pennsylvania Dutch is quite high - nearly 30% in LaGrange County, for instance.  So Amish political influence is rather strong in those parts of the country, even if indirectly.

Didn't the county itself vote 60% for Obama?  Wouldn't the city be even more liberal?

The city is pretty much the county.

The times I've visited Indianapolis, it seemed very conservative.

But you live in one of the most left-wing regions of North America; anything will seem conservative.

The city of Indianapolis (as opposed to the greater metro area, which I suspect probably voted for Romney) is ultra-safe D.

It's not all that much more Republican than most of the rest of the state outside of the Northwest and Indianapolis.
