Just watched Melancholia.

I'll withhold my own thoughts for now.

Dancer in the Dark is one of my favourite films, I cry every time I watch it.

I haven't watched any of his films, but he strikes me as a rather despicable human being.

I've discussed Lars von Trier in the past? I believe you, but why don't I remember this?

In any case, watching Melancholia has changed my thoughts on Lars von Trier. I'm trying to decide how, but it has.

You haven't discussed him, but you empty quoted "Von Trier is unwatchable" in a poll. It is in a locked thread, so I can't quote it, but here:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=174102.msg3743309#msg3743309

I remembered it because I was surprised he was unpopular. Most forumites belong to a segment that adores him in Denmark.

Well, Melancholia was eminently watchable in that I sat through it and was at times even engrossed and interested in what was going on, even though it wasn't what I'd call an enjoyable experience. (One review that I saw called it 'the von Trier film for people who hate von Trier films', so I guess that might be what was going on here.) I'm still not voting FF, though, and Dogville and ESPECIALLY The Idiots were still baffling ordeals that I wouldn't wish on anybody; in the latter case it's not even that I especially dislike Dogme films--The Celebration was incredible.

I liked Dancer in the Dark, which is the only one I have seen, but for the sake of my mental health it may be the only one I do see.

As a rule, I'm not a fan - Dancer in the Dark was basically torture porn, but I think Melancholia was a gorgeous film and about 50% of Nymphomaniac was good. Dogville is a great film and probably the only one of his that I can say I like and have watched multiple times.

Being a despicable human being doesn't make a man uncapable of making great films. If the poll is about Lars Von Trier as a filmmaker, my opinion is that I found Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark exceedingly good. I have mixed opinions on other films (The Idiots or Dogville) and I haven't seen others that apparently are more controversial, maybe because I lost interest. If the poll is about Von Trier as human being my answer, from the little I know about his persona, would be "miserable". Maybe because of Björk, who had an argument with him during the making of Dancer...

Wouldn't call him the world's greatest film-maker, perhaps, but to call his movies pretentious, or whatever the main charge might be, strikes me as quite bizarre. I've seen Dogville, Manderlay, Antichrist and Nymphomaniac (might be forgetting 1 or 2), and they strike me as very lighthearted and quite humorous in a rather wry-ish way. If you're up for that sort of thing (and as a general rule I am) then you'll be amused by them. If you're not, I guess you'll also miss the joke in Nietzsche.

I love von Trier. The man is a bit of an a**hole obviously and a provocateur. People make a mistake when they take him seriously I think.

He's actually incredibly funny and has a very interesting backstory.

I've seen

Dancer in the Dark
Dogville
The Boss of It All
Melancholia
The Kingdom (TV-series)
Antichrist

Dogville is one of my favourite movies, the Boss of it All is incredibly funny. I guess I liked Antichrist the least (I don't enjoy gory violence much) but even that was pretty good.

I don't like him or his movies, but I do admire him as a salesman. He can sell niche movies to a relative large audience, through his ability to make the movies controversial and creating controverses about his own person. He has been a gift to Danish cinema with his ability to make Danish movies respected among foreign consumers (even if it's among a niche segment).

As for the whole "Nazi controvers", which was the result of Lars von Trier answering a stupid and insulting question with sarcasm. Lars von Trier grew up with a Jewish father, but later found out his real father was his mother's boss in the social ministry Fritz Michael Hartmann, this had become public knowledge and some journalist asked Trier for his admiration for the Nazi aesthetic had anything to do with his German origin (the Hartmann family arrived in Denmark in 1762, Fritz had been part of the Danish resistance, Hartmann and Trier had not had any contact with each other). Funny how such a question got a very sarcastic answer. Of course in the end it just showed, no matter how stupid and rude journalist are, they win in the end.

Yeah, the Nazi controversy was a travesty. I watched the press conference and it was one of those things where if it was a friend in a bar no one would think the person was actually a Nazi. That he got banned from Cannes for it was ridiculous.
