Not wanting to saddle his successor with a war of another's making, President Madison has so far resisted calls to respond to British meddling in the Northwest Territory with arms. Though news that the British Parliament has repealed the Orders of Council has temporarily allayed fears of war between the United States and Great Britain, tensions between the two countries remains high. Signaling Madison's declining influence within his party, the Democratic-Republican caucus rejected Madison's hand-picked successor, instead nominating Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford of Georgia. To oppose him, the Federalists have once again nominated Senator John Marshall of Virginia. Marshall's running mate is anti-war Republican DeWitt Clinton, who party leaders hope will appeal to moderate voters who might otherwise vote for Crawford. Though both candidates support rechartering the National Bank and extending internal improvements in the West, the primary issue of the campaign is foreign policy, with Marshall promising to avoid war at all costs and war hawks rallying behind Crawford.

I guess it's true that the third time's the charm. I pity the poor historians who will have to explain why the American people elected a man they had already rejected twice in a row by a 40 point margin.

IRL, Crawford's ambitions were doomed when he had a stroke, IIRC.  Assuming I'm not mistaken, that could well be the reason.

1812 Election

Senator John Marshall (Federalist-Virginia)/ Lt. Governor DeWitt Clinton (Democratic-Republican-New York): 171 Electoral Votes; 73.7% popular votes
Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford (Democratic-Republican-Georgia)/ Congressman Henry Clay (Democratic-Republican-Kentucky): 46 Electoral Votes; 26.3% popular votes

It would be said often afterwards that it was John Marshall's resemblance of George Washington that won him the presidency in 1812. With the nation on the brink of war and internal factions threatening to disrupt the government, one could not help but think of the very similar circumstances under which the "Father Of His Country" had accepted the chief magistracy. Having been narrowly defeated in two previous campaigns for president, Marshall went on to win the Election of 1812 in a landslide, winning every state north of the Mason-Dixon line except Ohio as well as North Carolina, Louisiana, and his home state of Virginia.
