Just look at "Bridge Over Troubled Water" if there was ever any doubt.

FFs. Their contortion of 'El Condor Pasa' is weirdly anemic and doesn't deserve to be as well-known as it is but other than that they're great.

Paul Simon is literally the greatest.  I actually think his very best work came in his solo career, and might even call Bridge Over Troubled Water a touch uneven, but S&G are epic golden greats without a doubt.

A totally-subjective and subject to change top five:

1. America
2. Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall
3. Keep The Customer Satisfied
4. The Boxer
5. Fakin' It

But, god, nearly all of it is amazing.

They're awesome.  Their songs are my favorite to play on guitar.

What is the version of that song you like better?

They're at 24-0. Can't recall an artist that got no con-votes after this many votes on here.

I will be a HP or whatever and say that they're mostly insufferable. Paul Simon is one of the few songwriters for whom the word "pretentious" isn't egregiously misused. "And you read your Emily Dickinson, And I my Robert Frost".

Good job cherrypicking one of his, like, five bad songs.  Roll Eyes

Also sometimes a little pretension can be a good thing.

I think the better word for Paul Simon's lyrical excesses would be twee. But, I think Paul Simon is great.  He's one of those artists who can get away with sort of sentimental, mannered earnestness that would annoy you if some other artist tried the same thing.

If your recording career spans the mid sixties to the 00s, you're going to write some mediocre songs.  And, you have to think some super coked up record producer screwed up some of those songs along the way.

That is not a bad song.

I'm basically agreeing with traininthedistance, except that my favorite Paul Simon song is "Graceland." It was my gateway drug to Simon--I remember hearing it for the first time as a 4th grader and getting chills, which is only one of 2~3 times in my life that that has happened with music.

There's a lovely version by a group called Grupo Andes that has a faster tempo and a part towards the end where the melody shifts in a really interesting way. That was the first version that I heard and it's negatively impacted my opinion of renditions that don't include those features. S&G's decision to give it English lyrics I also find questionable.

They'd be in my top 5 I think.

I was lucky enough to see them perform together live some years ago. Phenomenal stuff.

I'll admit, Simon can be a bit annoying. But that still is a good song on the whole.'

My top five as of now:

5. Why Don't You Write Me?
4. Bridge Over Troubled Water
3. Mrs. Robinson
2. For Emily
1. America
