MLK: 166
Nixon: 372

Nixon still wins easily and puts up FDR 1936 numbers in the south but MLK due to his civil right accomlishments and his amazing speaking ability will able to able to put up a fight in New England and the Midwest.

It wouldn't matter which party, MLK would've lost badly (I'd use the term "got slaughtered", but he did get assassinated IRL). It's worth noting many northern voters then were racists (and some still are), and may have seen an African-American as the nominee as going to far.

MLK's party record is mixed, but in 1972 he probably would've ran as a D. But I really doubt he would run at all. And if he ran against Nixon... yeah

He would have been instrumental in getting blacks more motivated to vote, especially in the wake of the Amendment that changed the voting age from 21 to 18, and Teddy Kennedy perhaps could have triumphed over Jimmy Carter in 1980 election.

He might have won in 1976 after being elected to Congress in 1970 or so.

MLK would have a hard time winning any states.  His message at the end of his life was left-wing, and while he was a powerful orator and could critique the national situation, Nixon would probably still hold onto a good job approval rating. "Dr King is one the greatest Americans who ever lived, and we're voting for Nixon" would be a common sentiment.   And then there would be those who wouldn't vote for a black.

If Dr King does live on, perhaps that changes the political landscape and national attitudes in other ways.  Maybe less dissatisfaction in 68, and Humphrey (or another candidate) manages to do well enough to cause an electoral vote stalemate?

I could see MLK becoming President in 1976 if he hadn't died, but I sincerely doubt he would have wanted to be President. He was an activist, not a politician.

If he felt that civil rights progress had stalled in the '70's and 80's, I could see him doing a 3rd party run to try and deadlock the EC so that minority representatives in the House could negotiate something better.  But in terms of truly wanting to be a politician, that was not his style.

Reagan/Bush 214 (39.2%)
Carter/Mondale 192 (37.3%)
MLK Jr./Anderson 129 (22.5%)

He'd have lost every state in the Union.  He'd only have taken the District of Columbia's 3 EVs.

If that had happened, the Democrats in most of the Deep South would have nominated slates of unpledged Democratic electors, or electors pledged to George Wallace, to save local Democrats from disaster.
