So says the New York Times.

Silver is a corrupt jerk who has been Assembly Speaker since the 1990s.  Assembly Democrats will have no choice but to dump Silver now.  Governor Cuomo will likely be instrumental in determining who would be the next Speaker.

There was talk of Assembly Republicans entering into a coup with some Assembly Democrats to dump Silver before this happened.  Their votes will probably not be necessary.

No question that he was total scum when he attacked Teachout for being anti-semitic for saying she'd support the Obama administration on Israel.

Well the downside is Cuomo will have influence in choosing the next speaker.

Even with Cuomo essentially choosing the next speaker, this is better news for Democrats than a still in power, indicted Sheldon Silver.

New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver surrendered to the FBI in lower Manhattan Thursday, where he was placed under arrest, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Silver has always been part of the problem with the dysfunction with the Legislature in Albany

NY democrats are easily the most incompetent State majority party, it's almost fascinating.

Anyway, good riddance.

So far his caucus doesn't seem in a terribly outraged mood. Though David Paterson is defending him.

I don't think I have ever seen a NY politician that didn't look corrupt.  The only one I like is de Blasio.

De Blasio praised Silver post-arrest.

I am sure that is for payback since Silver was the person that put a lot of effort into pushing the De Blasio agenda in the State government.

Silver is stepping down as speaker, per the New York Daily News.  A committee of 5 Assemblymen will take his place while the trial process is ongoing.
