There won't be a five-headed hyrdra in charge.  Majority Leader Joseph Morelle of Rochester will serve as interim speaker until February 10, when there will be an election.

At this point, I don't care who controls Congress/The White House in 2016. Shut down the NYS Legislature, Statewide Government and let Congress run it, like D.C (they can't possibly do any worse, can they?). Living in this state, I've just had enough.

It seems Silver's replacement as Speaker of the NY Assembly has been feathering his nest too (via office expense account abuse). The hunt for one truly honest person in Albany continues.

Maybe this thread should be converted into a NY corruption mega thread.

As bad as the NY State Government is, that's Congress you're talking about. Of course Congress would make it worse.

Sheldon Silver was convicted on all federal corruption charges today.  Because he has been convicted of felonies, Silver automatically loses his Assembly seat, and Governor Cuomo will call a special election to fill the vacancy when he gets around to it.

Good riddance!

If Cuomo is indicted or arrested, then Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul would be governor. The first female governor of New York. A historic feat, but a moderate Democrat from Upstate New York. I wonder if Hochul would run for election in 2018 or she would be primaried?

My thinking is that she would face a fierce primary and probably lose. I have a hard time seeing Downstate Dems accepting a moderate from suburban Buffalo without a fight.

Who would win the primary? Bharara?

Probably either Di Napoli or Schneiderman, Bharara gets talked up he's repeatedly stated he won't go into politics iirc. Though if several non-Hochul Dems run she'll prob skate by on a plurality by locking up Upstate, and if De Blasio is her only challenger then I would expect her to win by (once again) locking up Upstate and also peeling off anti-De Blasio Dems in Westchester/LI, but I'm willing to bet it would be relatively close (within a few points or so).

Kathy Hochul would have to be one of the savviest political operators in contemporary American politics to win a Democratic gubernatorial primary after a Cuomo indictment. Even in Upstate NY, most voters outside of the Buffalo area don't even know who she is. For anyone in her position, there would be no escaping the taint of Cuomo.
