James Cox supposedly would have made an excellent president.

Goldwater and McCain come to mind immediately from more recent times. Longer ago, Henry Clay and Winfield Scott would've made good Presidents.

Of all the losing candidates that I would NOT have voted for in that year by far my favorite would be John Davis.  The 1924 election was the ideal election for me.  I would be for Collidge but would find Davis very attractive and much to like.  Too bad Davis did not run in 1928 or 1920 or I would have backed him as opposed to the GOP candidates in those years.

Henry Clay (W) 1832, 1844
Winfield Scott (W) 1852

Samuel Tilden (D) 1876
William J. Bryan (D) 1896, 1900, 1908
Adlai E Stevenson (D) 1952, 1956

I didn't include those who actually served as president at some point (Adams, Van Buren) or those who I like mainly because their opponents were terrible (Fremont).

Van Buren is an obvious pick. Van Buren beating Harrison would be great.
