If the GOP governed through the 30's would they become more economically interventionist like the democrats did? They might have become the centre-left party instead of the democrats if that happened.

Maybe not.  If Smith had been in the White House, I'm doubtful Smoot-Hawley would have been enacted, so the Great Depression wouldn't have been quite as severe, so maybe the Dems could have regained either the White House in 1936 or Congress in 1938 after losing them in 1932.
