WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who disappeared from his base in Afghanistan in 2009 but was released last year in a prisoner swap with the Taliban, will be charged with desertion, according to NBC.

What does the United States military gain by doing this, exactly?

Given the fact the military, not us, have in essence indicted him for a major crime based on facts we don't have, they gain the hope that few others will try this lest they face a similar charge and a possible life in prison sentence.

You have to send a message that desertion is not an option.  Period.
