Only one will run, they're close friends and allies. At this point Salmon seems likelier, plus he's run statewide before. The crappy polling we have says both would start out as favourites over McCain.

Hmmmm, Mccain is in a much more unfavorable than Cochran was. However, he's a savier politician so he can survive in the end.

Remember how McCain flattened Hayworth? Excited for a repeat performance.

Salmon and Schweikert are better candidates than Hayworth, and McCain is far less popular than he was in 2010.

I have a feeling Salmon will end up winning the primary but lose the general

Unless the democrats run Sinema or Kirkpatrick (which is a legitimate possibility, but far from a certainty), I don't really see any republican losing AZ, barring a terrible republican campaign or an utter democratic wave. Carmona/Giffords/Napolitano would make it close, but it's hard to see them actually winning.

Considering how unpopular McCain is now, getting primaried is a legitimate threat for him. My tentative prediction is that if McCain survives the primary, he'll win re-election, but if he gets primaried, Democrats will have a real chance. It could be like Indiana in 2012.

Sinema would be an opposition researcher's dream.  Kirkpatrick, Carmona, Kelly, Stanton, and Gordon all seem like they could win statewide.

As expected and yes, Salmon is much stronger than Hayworth. In fact Salmon running would mean that McCain retiring becomes more likely but you never know with him.

Sadly there are few Arizonans here.

Unlike Pat Toomey, McCain's approvals (at least the most recent polling) had him deeply underwater, not unknown.

Indeed. Napolitano trailed McCain by 8 in the McCain at 29% approval poll (and disapprovals in the high 50s). She's D.O.A. if she tries to runs statewide again.

Being an ex-Obama official surely doesn't help.

That's the definition of a win-win right there. Granted, there's others like Franks and Arpaio who are even more incompetent than Salmon is, but Salmon (or McCain if he survives) could easily jeopardize this seat with the right Democrat and right climate.

Kirkpatrick, Sinema, Giffords, Carmona, Stanton and Gordon are all good options.

Napolitano needs to be avoided though. She destroyed her image and she apparently doesn't even reside in Arizona anymore.

Can Napolitano even run? She's the President of the UC system and therefore is probably living in California.

It turns out, no, actually. I guess Arizona has a law that states you need to be a resident of the state for five years before running for elected office. This happened to Frank Riggs.

I guess she can be crossed off the list then! Cheesy

That's too bad that California has one less chance to get rid of her.

Two related stories:

She'd lose pretty badly.  Stanton, Kirkpatrick, or even Carmona would be much better candidates.

I hope these unpatriotic Tea Party scumbags go down in flames...... they are challenging a man who happens to be the biggest thorn in Obama's side to boot
