I wonder if McCain will hit her on the chem-trail theories if she begins to become a threat

Most likely. I remember him attacking Hayworth for dabbling in birtherism.
I just read that she attended an event where a speaker said McCain should be hung, so yeah she's getting steamrolled

FWIW, Carmona carried AZ-01 in 2012.

Jeff Flake was/is a terrible candidate and the worst Republican Senator out there.  I almost would tell the tea party to forego the McCain challenge and challenge Flake, who actually masquerades as a conservative and votes like an amnesty liberal. Atleast McCain is open and honest about his many deviations from conservatism.

Do we have maps of 2012 Senate election results by Congressional District? I couldn't seem to find a thread on that. I'm mostly interested in McCaskill's 2012 win, when I believe she carried a host of R+8 districts.

^ Stephen Wolf, from DKE, has a map of 2012: (using normal colors)

You can dig through his massive spreadsheet archive for the data. The only thing to note is that he mostly just does two-party results.

Here's MO:

And what I came up with for Flake/Carmona:

Thanks Miles! Would've been cool to see McCaskill carry MO-8 too. So close.

All very interesting. Ones that stand out to me are Donnelly winning IN-8 and Baldwin losing Dave Obey's old district. And what a flip in Virginia from Warner '08 to Kaine '12.

^ FWIW, the only county to vote for McCaskill in '06 but not '12 (Oregon County) is in MO-08.

Salmon is "strongly considering" and will make a decision by early August.

Considering the going buzz was that he was not going to run previously, this sounds promising.

It's odd for him to be reconsidering now, just as Democrats land a candidate who'd love to take on the weakened winner of a bloody primary.

Good news! Salmon isn't my favorite but he's preferable to McCain by a long shot. Hell, Kirkpatrick is preferable to McCain too.

I don't like McCain at all, but I'm not about to cheer for the Tea Party types like Salmon - especially considering that it's Arizona, which is one of those states that is only getting more Republican as it grows.

If Salmon runs, maybe McCain will get Sarah Palin to stump for him like she did against Hayworth last time. Tongue  I suppose this primary will pull McCain even more to the Right.

Salmon doesn't have Hayworth's record of pork barrelling.

McCain cannot out fiscal conservative him like he hid Hayworth. He will also lock up both the border hawks and probably the Paul types as well, the latter of which Hayworth wasn't capable of doing it either.

And Palin is a spent force now.

Jeff Flake earned a lot of props from me for opposing the corruption and out of control spending during the Bush-Delay years. That said, since he joined the Senate he has voted with McCain constantly and lost most libertarian appeal that he had, which was his only saving grace. I wouldn't be surprised to see Schweikert or somebody primary him in 2018.

Salmon's biding his time, but is getting plenty of encouragement.

It is safer to have it be someone with political experience then someone with none at all, particularly in a state with so many hispanic voters in a Presidential year, gaffes could be deadly. McCain is very vulnerable and having a more credible primary challenger emergy as a opposed to one is not serious, whilst being very bad for McCain would likely be good for the GOP's chances overall in this seat.

McCain says he's actively fundraising but might wait till September to assemble a team.

The problem with congressmen is that they never have the balls to challenge an incumbent.
For example, Lamar Alexander would have likely lost if a representative had tried to challenge him.

Well I mean, being in the Senate wouldn't be that much different, plus the chance of losing seniority and power is pretty high when challenging an incumbent. Most of the time its a risk not worth taking.

Unfortunate, even if he were to lose, he would've put up a good fight. Looks like McCain will successfully clear the nomination with small-time opposition. Kirkpatrick is a good candidate who won by 5 points in a R wave in a district Romney won, and I think she'll take the toughest fight McCain has ever faced. I think she's being underestimated.

Salmon never sounded that interested. He has a subcommittee chairmanship, nearly didn't make it back to Congress, and had already lost a statewide race. Plus he's 57, so it isn't like he could take a loss and wait 10 years to see what comes up.

It'll be McCain vs. Kelli Ward for the primary, probably. McCain wins 58-42 or so.

If McCain wins the primary, it's very good news for Republicans.
