Rockefeller: Promoted the Rockefeller drug laws which saw lengthy 10-20 year prison sentences for mere possession of illicit drugs, heavy-handed and brutal crackdown of the Attica uprising. Came from a wealthy family but did I think did a pretty good job for those who were not wealthy.

Wallace: Was a segregationist and famously blocked the doors to a university after the feds desegregated the system. Did modernized Alabama and later did a 180 and denounced his earlier support for segregation. Helped build up the educational system of Alabama.

Rockefeller drug laws were bad but at least they wouldn't have effected me unlike segregation. Wallace did some good when he returned but what he did before that is unjustifiable.

On one hand, Wallace was a virulent racist who fought integration with tooth and claw. On the other, Rockefeller increased the number of African Americans employed by the state government by 50% and backed the Equal Rights Amendment.

That was easy.

Rockefeller I guess, but his war on drugs was absolutely abominable.

There is probably some overlap between our reasons. For example, I"m assuming you also oppose his drug policies.

They're both vicious racists who deserved to be stoned, not Presidential contenders.

But Rockefeller.

Huh, maybe Wallace is a much more complicated and multi-faceted figure than you think.

4th-term Wallace (after all, a reformed racist is better than an institutional racist), but taking their entire careers into account, Rockefeller.

It's still nothing compared to all the excellent policies Rockefeller put out (sans the War on Drugs, which is only good on paper).

I don't like his drug policies either, but it's a stretch to say he was a racist, especially one in the same boat as GEORGE WALLACE.  Rockefeller was a consistent and vocal supporter of the civil rights movement.

Or maybe he's a politician who realized he had to change his rhetoric or retire. Either way, his tenure during the 60s was much more historically significant than his "transformation" years later.

I might add that Nathan B. Forrest, founder of the KKK, had a "transformation" late in life too. Does that excuse his earlier actions?
