Restore our Rivers Act

1. The Ice Harbor Dam, Lower Monumental Dam, Little Goose Dam and Lower Granite Dam located in the Columbia River watershed shall be slated  for destruction at the earliest possible date

2. A commission shall be created to assess the environmental impact of other dams located in the Pacific Region, as well as the effect to the local community of the elimination of the dams

3. Dams identified by the earlier stated commission to be defunct/harmful to the wildlife in the river, with the cost not outweighing the benefits, will be retroactively torn down according to the guidelines put forth by the committee

To give some rationale for this urgent legislation (from Greywater Action):

Why do you still support dams even when a huge amount have been shown to benefit no one while at the same time disrupting once abundant salmon runs that could help local communities immensely?

The Transcendental Democrats support public investment and pro-growth policies, so we are in favour.

Huh?

The Transcendental Democrats are spot on as this legislation specifically targets defunct dams. Pro-growth as the fishing industry will be started up again in these areas and construction jobs will be created during the demolishing process of these dams.

The pros vastly outweigh the cons for tearing down these defunct dams; I stress myself on this. This legislation targets dams already known to be an absolute negative to the surrounding area and creates a commission to determine other dams that could be torn down without significant repercussions. We are not willy-nilly tearing down the Hoover Dam here.

I support dams, as a way to get clean water, a resource for the community. I believe dams, provide jobs for worker's involved in the dam's maintenance and construction. I believe that dams are environmentally- friendly way to get hydro-electricity for the community and finally, I believe dams provide a new way to explore and use water as a tool of energy.

So,

NAY.

Along with that, I fail to believe that the destruction of this dam will create jobs in the pacific, I also believe that the destruction of the dam will cause existing workers to lose their jobs. On this basis I am voting no.

- I thought I should have expanded on why I voted no.

As I spoke with Turkisblau on this matter,

Can we try to fix the dams and the problems with them then outright demolishing them?

The only way, I will support this bill, if there are four dams created as a replacement for the dams. This would also create new jobs for the Pacific.

Now wait you all! Two things; first, none of you are actually in office so this vote has no meaning. Second, this was a bill from the last session, I don't think you can overturn a veto on a bill that passed in a previous section (but maybe you can).

Either way you guys will have to swear into office, elect a Speaker, and then I suppose you can re-introduce this and foil any subsequent attempts on my part to veto it...
