Several Latin American countries that are on paper very heavily Catholic have gay marriage.

Well, it cannot be said my country is not a curious place... The issue of gay marriage is still quite controversial to many here, and while many in the Catholic Church have always been opposed it's the evangelicals who have led the strongest charge against homosexuals and civil unions.

To provide an example, a certain evangelical pastor has been shouting with a megaphone outside congress over the past few months to call those in support of this as degenerates and other things, and he even attacked a homosexual deputy a few days ago.

Not surprising.
