Neither, though LA would probably vote Green before NY.

Probably New York, considering Staten Island is allowed to run the whole show.

New York City has voted for Republican mayors over the past two decades, so New York City.

I remember reading that Giuliani would have lost if it wasn't for Staten Island.

Los Angeles had a Republican Mayor too in the past 20 years.  And, it's pretty silly to count Bloomberg as a Republican.

And, didn't New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx & Richmond vote more heavily for Obama over Romney than Los Angeles County?

Los Angeles County is huge though. It includes way more than the actual urban bits of LA (which don't really correspond to the city though).

Funny how LA  up until the middle of the twentieth century would be recognizable as one of the "WASPiest" large cities in America. The suburban counties adjacent to it (including but not limited to Orange County) were extremely Republican for a long time, and they were certainly not your stereotypical "moderate" or even "progressive" Republicans of the Northeastern cities or San Francisco, etc. An epicenter of the John Birch Society, one of Goldwater's best areas outside of Arizona and the Deep South, and obviously crucial to both Nixon and Reagan's campaigns for President, as well.

Clearly, New York City's Democratic tradition is far deeper in its historical roots.

Bloomberg was a registered Republican when he ran for office in 2001 and 2005, and ran on the Republican line as an independent in 2009.  He was not a Democrat while in office.  A Republican was New York City mayor for two decades until de Blasio.  Los Angeles hasn't had a Republican mayor in over a decade.

Vote GOP for what? Mayor? Governor? President? Any office? It makes a big difference.

For mayor I say NYC. For any federal race the correct answer is of course "don't hold your breath for either", but if forced to choose I would take LA.

For a governor's race it's closer, but i'd still guess probably LA.

Los Angeles. Both won't at a national or state level. NYC seems to be more friendly to R's in mayoral races though.

Probably New York, considering Staten Island is allowed to run the whole show.

473K people live in Staten Island
8.4 million people live in New York City total
Do the math.

National/statewide election?  LA falls first.  It's just a numbers thing.  NYC is usually 80% Dem.  LA County is usually around 70% Dem.

But the NYC Dems tend to be more conservative than LA Dems, and thus are more eager to back Republicans.

LA county is not the city of LA!

Wasn't Coolidge the last Republican nominee to win the city?

Los Angeles, because of Santa Monica.  But Staten Island runs pretty close to Santa Monica.  Richie area in a Democratic city.

Santa Monica is technically its own city.  And, Staten Island isn't the rich area of NYC.  It's more just  middle class across the board, rather than polarized between rich and poor.

Not only is Santa Monica not a part of LA, it also was rather (in)famous as the "People's Republic of Santa Monica" and its rent control policies.

Calvin Coolidge was the last Republican who carried New York City overall (though Eisenhower and Nixon came close to carrying the city in 1956 and 1972). Other than 1924, the only other times that the Republicans carried New York City were 1896 and 1920.

Aren't there poor areas of Staten Island?  After all the Wu Tang Clan came from there and I doubt they grew up rich.

Rent control is a pretty right-wing policy, IMO.
