It's 2024, Republicans are hoping to gain back the White House for the first time in sixteen years. Vice-President Martin Heinrich has managed to snag the Democratic nomination after a bloody primary fight, however there is widespread discontent and several third party challengers have emerged.
Is this after eight years of Hillary Clinton as President of the United States?
Yeah that was my thinking. The 2016 election is close but the economy gradually improves throughout her first term and she wins reelection by a fairly large margin. The left grows increasingly restless though after sixteen years of being in the wilderness with Democratic presidents and there's a renewed anti-globalization and pro-labor movement growing out of OWS and Bernie Sanders which leads to Socialist Alternative becoming a national party that wins city council races. 2024 is a brutal primary fight on both sides and the last hurrah of the Tea Party, however the GOP establishment, rigs the primary calender to favor an establishment candidate. Paul Ryan attacks Rob Portman saying "We followed you before and you led us down the road to defeat!" but Rob Portman eventually narrows him out for the nomination.
So what would a President Hillary Clinton have accomplished in her eight years that would make the left-wing activists in her party so restless? Used the fast track authority won by President Obama in 2015 to pass a revival of the Free Trade Area of the Americas trade agreement as he did with the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Trans-Atlantic trade agreement with the European Union? Modernized the nuclear arsenal? What's happening in your scenario?
That, and further military interventions in the middle east. Congress would also be permanently deadlocked due to a Republican house and very narrow Democratic or very narrow Republican majority in the senate leading President Hillary to make the type of "grand bargin" that Obama always wanted.
hmm, maybe I should write this into a timeline...
