Also, rather ironic that the wife of the Kenyan Communist Muslim looked like this in Saudi Arabia...

While the wife of the Real 'Murican Freedom Defendin' Christian Soldier donned the symbol of Islamo-fascist oppression...

I didn't think Laura Bush wore the hijab when she visited Saudi Arabia? I know Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Clinton didn't.

Personally, I think the coverage this is getting is silly. From what I've seen, most Saudis (save some on twitter) did not care. This seems like fairly standard protocol for diplomatic visits to Saudi Arabia.

As a man I can't really say, I wouldn't mind sneezing alcohol into Saudi Arabia though if I knew I was going to be stuck there for a long time.

sneezing alcohol sounds dreadfully uncomfortable.

Yes, I would wear one of the less restrictive form.  It just seems like such a simple thing to not distract from whatever purpose of why you are there, and also to participate in a very small way in what life is like for women who live there and have no choice.

Yes. There is nothing inherently oppressive about the hijab.

Non-Muslim women in the Kingdom are generally under no real obligation to wear a veil or headscarf in most public places (they are required to wear an abaya, though), although it is 'recommended' as a sign of 'respect' and it's a good idea in more conservative places (like low-income or old neighborhoods, or a souq). Some douchey and insufferable mutawa'a may usually pester them to 'cover up', although that's less common nowadays.

Of course, inherently it's a sign of respect and well "When in Rome".

Of course Saudi Arabia isn't exactly on the bucket list either so....

Anyway, isn't Michelle Obama gorgeous? She's definitely the best-looking First Lady since Jackie, and possibly even more so.

If I were a woman, I'd understandably be reluctant to go.  But I would eat my dignity and wear it but make very clear it was only out of fear of being persecuted.

In the unlikely case that I visited SA I would of course respect the local customs, whether I was a man or woman. It's the locals country, and if I wasn't willing to respect their customs, while visting it, I shouldn't visit it.

Probably, in the same way that I would wear a Kipa in a synagogue or avoid streaking in the Vatican. I wouldn't wear a face veil though.
