I've developed a weird affinity for them, they are in a way the original hipster Christians.

I don't which of the above posts is worse, as you both share the folly of focusing upon your own narrow interests in viewing them.  Probably Andrew's since the focus isn't even on what makes this particular denomination distinctive.

That said, the snake handlers are wildly off the Mark.  Even if one accepts the passage in question as canon, to deliberately seek out serpents merely to pick then up (or to deliberately drink poison) contradicts other scriptural passages.

It doesn't make them distinctive. 99% of their ideology is the same as the pentecostal church down the road. That's like saying that the First Church of Funny Hats is 'distinctive'.

Maybe a little less than ninety-nine, as apparently they were some of the last people in that part of the country to bail from the Democratic Party, whereas the Pentecostals were among the first, but point taken. The snake-handlers are only superficially interesting, really. Among small Appalachian denominations the Primitive Baptist Universalists are much more off-the-beaten-path.

What is the mortality rate among them? It's hard to see how such a sect could preserve itself in the long run. Tongue

And we humans share 99% of our DNA with chimps and bonobos, yet I dare say we Homos are quite distinct from our closest primate relatives, the Pans.

FWIW I found this a lot worse than the snake handling:

I've actually seen someone preach a sermon while holding a snake after all (a completely harmless and non-toxic snake of course.)
