Yea... So I experienced the ultimate betrayal.  My best friend of 10 years and the person that I confided all in and believed was a genuinely good person murdered his girlfriend and her dad for a reason I don't understand at some point between Friday night and Saturday morning.

I'm in utter disgust, shock, and disbelief.  Almost numb.  Needing to vent... And that what this is.  I guess.

Comments welcome.

I don't really know what to say but if you need to vent more in a less public venue then please feel free to message me.

Ugh. I've never had anyone one to me turn out to be that awful but I remember in college my friend getting upset after a high school friend of his was arrested for raping a 16 year old girl and how he couldn't believe someone he knew that was that was generally cool and so nice was capable of being that terrible. It's hard to imagine how it feels.

I'm sorry this happened.  It still hurts to lose a friend even if you're questioning your friendship.  What a terrible thing for all involved.

Jesus that's awful.  I'm so sorry to everybody involved.  Has he been arrested?

Are you like this in real life?  This isn't about you or your barely related anecdotes.

I wish there was something I could say to help, but I really don't know what to say except that I'm so sorry.  That's terrible and if you need someone to talk to, just shoot me a PM.  I really sorry and will keep you and the victim's families in my prayers.

Sorry for not clarifying.  He has been arrested.  My feeling about him is of utter betrayal.  This is a person that I spent ten years talking about politics, religion, and the most important; the nature of good and evil.  We always agreed that murderers were the lowest of the low, repulsive, beyond forgiveness.  He was to be my best man; and mine his.  He considered me an uncle to his daughter.

Today he gave into evil, and committed the most heinous of crimes.  And to be worse?  They were BLUDGEONED to death.  He didn't give them a merciful death.

I am in shock, horror, disbelief, and fear of what could've been if I decided to hang out with him on Friday.  I might have been caught in this destructive psycho's rage.

You'll drive yourself crazy if you try to think of all the what-ifs. There may be no "why" ... at least not a good one.

You'll have to handle this in the way that you think best. I have no comparable experience on which to draw. But at the end of the day, he is still a person, and if he meant a lot to you before, there are ways to be there for him now without minimizing the harm that he has caused. Your presence can encourage acceptance of responsibility and repentance.

I watched a documentary about a neighbor of Jeffrey Dahmer that befriended him.  The biggest thing she felt when it all came out was the betrayal.  A very deep betrayal.

Yeah, don't think this is at all your fault or even slightly something you could have changed, HD. It's not. This guy was clearly deeply messed up and deceived you. No one could ever see something like this coming.

I doubt that the guy was literally always a psychopath who just deceived HockeyDude for years. He was probably normal and then - for whatever reason - he snapped and was consumed by violent rage.

Anyway, this really sounds horrible. I have a friend just like this (we've been best friends for years and have had tons of really deep and meaningful conversations) and if something like this happened I'd probably feel crushed. You really shouldn't let it devalue your past good memories and discussions with him, though, since as mentioned above he was probably normal back then.

God damn. I heard about this on the news earlier, but I can't believe I'm reading this here. How awful, you have our sympathies.

It seems he attempted suicide as well.  The wounds in his mugshot are pretty gruesome.  Sad

I'm really sorry HockeyDude.  This is really awful.

Agreed with this. Judging from how you seem completely blindsided, I doubt he ever gave any indication he was capable of doing something like this. It's definitely true at times that those that we think we know best, we really don't know at all. So when you finally process and sort this out in your head, please don't blame yourself in any way.
