When he folded the ballot to submit, the ink from the Gore vote caused him to vote for Bush.

He wrote in Jeb Bush in the Senate election?

EDIT: Nevermind, reread the rules.

Was there perhaps another person by the last name of Bush that was running for some local race in Florida that appeared on the same ballot lower down from the presidential race between Gore and George W. Bush. The person voted for the lower tier Bush, thereby voting for both a Bush and a Gore?

I reread your original comment. I see that you said that he only voted for president. Now I am truly stumped.

You guys are close but close doesn't cut it.

Here is another hint... you have to turn this riddle on its head - literally.

To be completely honest, I don't think this actually has any answer.

All of Vox Populi's comments have been stuff to with relativity and geometry...

"think laterally"

"inside the box by outside the box"

"on its head"

What does it mean?

Try this one on for size

In 2000, a man lives in Florida and receives one ballot on voting day. He only votes for Gore on this ballot. However, when he submits his ballot, he ends up voting for both Bush and Gore. There was only one ballot submitted, there were no hanging chad errors, he only voted for president and there were no write-ins of any sort. How is this possible?
I'VE GOT IT!

His friend named Gore didn't vote, but he voted for his friend who couldn't vote named Gore. His friend named Gore would have voted for Bush, so Man A votes for Bush for Gore.

Alternatively: the man's name is Gore.

Pretty much wrote exactly that.

A man has a friend named Gore that is unable to vote that day, so the man votes in place of his friend, or in other words he votes for his friend Gore. On the ballot, the man votes for George Bush for President. He voted for Gore to vote for Bush, so in this way he is voting for both Gore and Bush while only officially voting for one candidate for President.

Doesn't matter since apparently it's incorrect.

This is a lateral thinking puzzle, which means the best way to solve it is to ask simple yes/no questions to narrow things down. I'm actually a member of a forum dedicated to these sorts of puzzles.

So:

Is the man Human/Adult/Male? Are we talking about the same ballot through the whole thing? Does "Bush" only refer to George W. Bush? Does "Gore" only refer to Al Gore? Does it matter that it was in Florida? Could it have happened in another state?

This thread was started when David Bowie and Fidel Castro were alive. Maybe, they participated in this forum, using fake names. In this case, they died before knowing the answer of this challenge.
I think it is better to give the answer. Otherwise, more people will die before the answer.

The man who voted for Gore in 2000 voted for Bush Sr. in 1992. Therefore, when he submitted his ballot in 2000, he ended up voting for both Bush and Gore.

You're welcome.

A different kind of answer here...

The riddle is a political message, he voted for Bush literally, but he voted for gore in the sense that Bush got us into wars in the middle east that resulted in a lot of dead people.

Did I win?

This is a good one, I have only four possible answers, neither one of which is going to be the answer and if not, I give up.

1). It's some weird play on words, which I can't imagine.. what that would be.
2). It has something to do with the butterfly ballot.. again that's not it either.
3). The ballot had a carbon copy... probably not it either...
4). It's some kind of trick question... no, I don't think you waste our time.

It's probably something easier than we think.. but I give up.

edit my guess it that the first guess is correct so I highlighted it.

Wait a minute.. another bad answer... He voted differently in the primary than in the general election. No that's not it according to the op.
