Assume they have always voted for the 2nd place national finisher in every election since 1936.

Someone who frequently changes his/her political views.  For instance, they would have voted for both Goldwater and McGovern.

Someone being purposefully contrarian by voting for the losing candidate each time.

Yes, but how would he know that?  He probably thought he was voting for the winner with Dewey in 48.

Yeah, I'm not sure you can find a person who did this for non-idiosyncratic "vote-for-the-loser" reasons.  Goldwater-Humphrey-McGovern is perhaps the hardest part to justify in any coherent way.  And as Carpetbagger pointed out, he/she would have to dislike Truman or like Dewey (more plausible due to 1944?) enough to violate this rule exactly once.

The closest I can think of is some sort of an antiwar, "Old Right" minarchist at least until we get to 2008...

I agree this person would generally be a dove, but Humphrey and Goldwater throw that off.

There probably isn't a single person fitting this description. The farthest I can see this happening is 1992- , which is just a Republican who didn't like GWB. The irony is that GWB could be considered the least competent GOP nominee during that span.

This describes Rothbard with the exceptions of 1948, 1964, 1972, and elections after 1995 of course.

I'd have thought Rothbard was more likely to support Goldwater or McGovern than Humphrey or Ford.

He thought Goldwater was too hawkish and McGovern too socialistic.

I'm pretty sure you could get a hardcore anti-New Deal conservative voting against Ike and Nixon as a protest, which could sustain a reverse bellwether behavior from 1932-1976.

I also think there are some Northern moderate Republicans (not true Rockefeller soft left or they would have gone for Obama) who have been reverse bellwethers from 1992-present.

well okay, let's not do the 100 years ago and go with a regular voter

In 1964, they vote for Goldwater because they are very conservative. However, the War in Vietnam begins to change them, and they vote for Humphrey in 1968 because of that sharp change, and then Mcgovern in 1972 for the same reason.

Since since this person is a Northerner, however, they have a strong disdain for Jimmy Carter, and as a result, vote Republican for the first time in decades for Ford. Carter proves troublesome, and this person probably votes for Kennedy in the primary, but nevertheless, holds through with Carter to the end, voting for Carter in the surprise landslide.

This person continues to vote Democratic until 1992. In 1992, they see H.W. Bush and admire how he's done the job. Traditionalists at heart, they are shocked at Clinton's affairs and, at their old age, vote for H.W. Bush.

Then this person dies.

Youse call this a challenge laddie?  It's quite simple!

The voter profile you describe is that of an elitist racist billionaire "socially liberal" WASP who still believes the Eugenics claptrap of his grandparents who has experienced mental deterioration cocurrent with old age!

Let's assume he's turned 100 this past November:

1936: After graduating with a C average from Harvard or wherever his parents' connections got him, he gets a job at a prestigious law firm in Boston and even donates money to Alf Landon's failed presidential bid.  To his chagrin he finds out quickly that the fabled city of his enlightened godfearing ancestors has now become dominated by corrupt Irish (shudder) ward bosses, mob bosses, and labor leaders whose politicking makes it impossible for there to be any decent Republican to win local office.  Disillusioned by what he sees he leaves Boston in 1939 and moves to Philadelphia after getting another job offer at a prestigious law firm.

1940: Now working out of Philadelphia, he backs Wendell Willkie for president out of the belief that FDR is leading the nation "down the road to socialism".  To his chagrin he finds out that the previously Republican dominated Philadelphia has now become a Democratic bastion due to many blacks jumping ship after the New Deal.  This disillusions our dear voter, who can not comprehend why black people would not vote Republican after everything the party has done for them.

1944:Still finding FDR's philsophy disgusting, our resilient respectable WASP joins Dewey in his attempt to oust the president.  Again, he is on the wrong side of history.

1948: After becoming a senior law partner, our Brahmin hero becomes active in the Dewey campaign a second time.  Emboldened and excited by what appears to be an easy victory he goes to bed for once knowing that America has found its savior.  He wakes up with a severe case of diarrhea and with news on the tv that "Truman defeats Dewey".

1952: After attending the 1952 GOP, our dear voter becomes disturbed by how many Southerners, Catholics, soldiers, and other undesirables he sees at the Grand Old Party convention.  Ever since Joseph McCarthy became such a hero attacking people for simply expressing their political views he has gotten a nasty taste of the Republicans.  Disillusioned with Ike's unwillingness to outright condemn McCarthy and gaining a newfound respect for Truman doing so, our hero votes for Adlai Stevenson.

1956: Our hero moves to Houston, Texas after accepting a cushy executive position at a billion dollar a year oil company.  Due to Ike's more business friendly policies and a properous economy he feels more inclined to vote Republican this time around.  However, at the end of the day what gets him to line up behind Stevenson is a short lived fear of thermonuclear war, which he believes could be prevented by getting rid of all nuclear weapons.  He is the only person in his office who votes for Stevenson.  He tells no one, obviously.

1960: If you knew our hero's story this one is patently obvious why he votes for Nixon.  The only note I would add here is that for once he is not the oddman out.

1964: After the Cuban Missile Crisis, our Ivy League millionaire oilman (now in his early fifties) renounces his anti-nuclear views in favor of a more warhawk foreign policy.  With his personal net worth now somewhere north of $50 million and with Goldwater promising to both take on the Communists and to lower his taxes, our hero becomes a Goldwater hack in the election.

1968: Having an outright hatred of hippies and the anti-war positioning (or at least perceived) of Nixon, our hero swallows his pride and votes for the socialistiic UHC supporting Hubert Humphrey, who has not really made anyy definitive stance for or against the war.  He does get a bit worried in the last few days when the bombing halt is announced, but he reasons that HHH wouuld be better at the barrgaining table than Hippie Nixon pulling them all out.

1972: I was going to say that our hero has a coming to Jesus moment, but it would be a lot easier for me to say that he was on medication on that November day and had a moment of ADD and filled in the wrong blank.  To this day he has no idea he had really voted for George McGovern instead iof Richard Nixon.

1976: Still unaware he had ever voted for McGovern, our hero goes into 1976 all out in force for Ford who he views as a return to the Good Old Days of proper Republican rule.

1980: Now in his early sixties, our affluent Yankee Harvard educated millionaire is distrustful of the masses of evangelical voters who flocked the RNC and forced Reagan to make a borderline surmon on the mount.  For once he has found someone who maybe more of a bible thumper than Carter.  Disgusted by the party openly courting anti-choicers, former segregationists, and people who foam at the mouth of adultery and divorce.  A three time divorcee in his late sixties with no children of his own, he feels little identity with the people at the convention.  He defects.

1984: After witnessing an economic recession and an exploded debt under a Republican President, our hero becomes disillusioned once again and defects to Mondale after Mondale attacks Reagan viciously on the debt.  At 69 years old, the now Social Security receiptient has little love for the party that Democrats have branded as trying to take his hog.

1988: Although he comes close to voting for HW Bush a few times (obviously due to his prestigioius background), our Harvard educated 73 year old voter goes to the booth and makes a mark for Dukakis after Bush capitulates too much to the ultra conservative bible thumper crowd.

1992: Our voter changes sides once more after HW Bush's first three years turn out to be rousing successes.  Though not a fan of his campaign he does not find himself bought over by Clinton campaigning on "the economy".  As a man who got hired three times during the Great Depression in his twenties and thirties due to his family connections he has long been shielded by the economic realities that the vast majority face.

1996: Our voter is confused by the similariity between the three campaigns and goes into the booth on election day undecided.  After deciding that Perot was a joke he pulls out a coin and flips it.  It lands heads up (Clinton), but he just feels like for some reason it would be wrong not to vote for Dole.  He reluctantly fills out the blank for Dole.

2000:After the successes of the Clinton administration combined with his disdain for Bush's folksy politics, our hero returns once more to the Democratic sideline to pull for the champion of the lockbox , gun control, abortion rights, and Global Warming Al Gore.

2004: Now at a fit 89, our hero pulls for Kerrry after what he perceives as a "moral crusade" by the Bush campaign.  After the election his mind begins to slip as old age catches up with his mind.

2008: At 93, our hero finds it harder to remember most things that happened just a decade ago but can recall his younger Landon supporting days just like yesterday.  Like he almost forgot the past thirty years ever happened, he goes into the voting booth and pulls for McCain enthusiastically.

2012: And a few weeks before his 98th birthday our hero is reduced to Eastwood talking to a chair level as he once again lines up for the GOP after Romney wins the nomination.  After revolting against the GOP because of their embrace of "social conservatism", our hero backs the Todd Akins and Richard Mourdocks of the world because of the "president's lies" about Benghazi.

Mecha is back to tackle your petty electoral challenges.

This is awesome! So i’m assuming he’s dead by 2016. If not you could just retcon the senility and have him support McCain and Romney over racism, then vote for Hillary because he thinks Trump is a loudmouth upstart before finally losing it between 2016 and 2020 and becoming a q-anon weirdo.

Hasn't been active since 2015, which is disappointing.
