It seems like the nomination could have been his for the taking if he had just let Chris Christie or someone else immolate themselves that year.

Nah, the only reason he polls high now is because he was a former nominee. If he never entered in 2012 and ran in 2016, he'd be with the irrelevants in the single digits.

Nope.

His profile would be too low. In 2010/2011, it looked like his success in business would be a major selling point, so it made sense for him to run at the time. And he'd still have to deal with potential rivals elected in 2009/2010 like Christie, Rubio, Paul and Walker.

Huntsman would have been much better positioned in a primary without Romney, his fellow Mormon businessman Governor, so that would be another factor. Perhaps in a world where Romney didn't run in 2012, Huntsman would be a top choice for 2016.
