They should have women on the shortlist.

It would look bad if it's obvious that they're picking a woman for the sake of picking a woman.

But Condoleeza Rice, Kelly Ayotte, Susanna Martinez and Nikki Haley are conventionally qualified to be on a national ticket. Carly Fiorina could also be a match for certain candidates, especially after a strong primary showing.

A slight advantage for the party is that the number of qualified individuals means it isn't as suspicous if they pick someone who isn't conventionally qualified. So if Joni Ernst or Carly Fiorina gets the nod, it won't be solely because the ticket needed a woman, given the availability of Haley, McMorris Rodgers, Fallin, Ayotte and Martinez.

I think Walker/Rice would be the best ticket.

I agree with this and it has little to do with Rice's gender or race.

Why do people think that someone who served in a top post in the very unpopular 2nd Term GWB administration would be some stellar VP pick? I'm honestly curious.
She's relatively popular, and familiar with the media and public.

If Scott Walker announces Condoleeza Rice as his running mate in eighteen months, the response won't be "Who?"

It would be big for the Republicans to nominate a woman of color, especially the most prominent woman of color in American political history. Some of the potential Republican nominees lack significant foreign policy experience, so she would be a good fit for Christie or one of the midwestern Governors.
