Why not just say the next Class B Senate election upon the ratification of this amendment? That way you won't put in a concrete timetable for implementation into an amendment which might not be ratified until well after that point.

It should be okay- three months is the time it would take to create the lines for the process.

Keep in mind that if we do pass this bill, we'll need to change the registration period for state changes. Having districts is useless if people can switch states once a day. It needs to be tied to region changes so people can't switch for 6 months.

Putting in a concrete date is a very bad idea- we have no idea how long the regions will take to ratify this.

I oppose this. I think the date for stopping special elections should be a week before the election date.

Do we really need a senate confirmation process on these maps?

I'm on board with most of this amendment, but I agree with Lief that we can't have senators voting on their own districts. That adds a totally unnecessary and silly layer of bureaucracy.

Another thing here is that it might be preferential for the R.G. to be the backup map drawer because he or she is the one most involved in the process of collecting voter rolls by state, etc., while the SoFE is primarily an election administration official. Not a big deal for me either way, but just a thought.

I believe Senator Griffin's amendment is a good one.

As do I. I will definitely be voting in favor of it.

A possibility of what a map under this system could look like.

The blue and purple districts have 36 residents, while the other three have 35 residents.

I propose this amendment.

There's really no need for that provision to be in there at all. The goal of this is not to mimic the regions as much as possible with these districts.

I definitely disagree; you put too little faith in our regional executives as doubt people will become that lazy and do what you're describing there. If they want to set such standards, they can do it among themselves.

I would agree to Talleyrands side of the issue here.

Another thing to note is that it's definitely not a good idea to put such specific guidelines in the constitution anyway.

But that raises the conflict of interest concerning whether the Senate should set the qualification for the electoral boundaries affecting half its body. I'm not opposed to it in the right circumstances, but I would have to hear more about what exactly you would suggest in this instance.

Can we do a final vote?

The other thing to consider is that for the sake of updating the constitution and not cluttering it with too many amendments, it might be a good idea to include the change oakvale suggests in this amendment anyway. We are already heavily altering the registration rules.

BTW, where exactly in the constitution is "one free move"? I know it's a silly question, but I've never been able to find it.
