A fine country, but I voted HCountry in this poll out of principle because doing an "opinion of" thread about your own country is almost as annoying as doing an "opinion of" thread on yourself.

I'm pleased that you included a link to Austria's Wikipedia page in this poll. I had never heard about the place.

The country that willingly joined their fellow Austrian-born leader of Germany to form a More Perfect Union.

Edit: this was more a general protest of this poll, rather than a statement on the good people of Austria, for the reason that Mr. Morden noted.

It's pretty annoying when countries are too stupid and unoriginal to think of their own names. Dominica and Dominican Republic are basically the same thing. Having the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo is also stupid. Not to mention all those Guineas mucking up Africa.

Austria just stole the name "Australia" and removed an "a" and an "l". So yeah, horrible unoriginal country that started World War I and World War II.

Major FC and one of my favorite countries in Europe; especially for, among other things, the role it played in the destruction of the vile Ottoman Empire.

You're thinking of the Byzantines actually, who defeated the entire Ottoman empire by the end of the 16th century.

I know these things because Europa Universalis IV told me so

You know what they say, come for the scenery, stay for the basement.

I'm a bit mixed. I got some relatives and also some great Austrian friends. Superficially the alps and cafés and so on are really nice.

On the other hand you have the continued anti-semitism and racism, the basement rapes and the harsh reactionary stuff. Kind of winds up horrible I think.

The basement-thing isn't that big really.

There were 2 cases here (Fritzl and Natascha Kampusch), but people on Atlas apparently think this is widespread.

In fact, violence against women, rape etc. is very low in Austria and this basement stuff also happens in other countries: there have been several cases in the US, South America and Germany.

Tender - they bring that whole stuff up all again because you always reply to it. Let it be, just ignore it if it bugs you, just don't reply. They all get the biggest amusement from your replies, so just let it be. (they being every single Atlas user)

Lol.

The Austrians were unable to cope with the Ottoman thread and it took outside efforts, led by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, to expell Turks from Austria and Hungary in result of the 1683 Battle of Vienna, which effectively ended the Ottoman Empire posing a real threat for Europe.

And if anyone had a major role in "destruction of the Ottoman Empire", it were Russians during the Russo-Turkish wars and then British during the World War I, when Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire were allies.

Compared to this, events such as inconclusive Austro-Turkish War (1787–91) or formal annexation of Bosnia, already controlled by Vienna under the Treaty of Berlin, in 1909 were minor developments.
