In B.C. everyone describes Ontario as being in the "east"; it takes a bit of getting used to.

What else would you call it? Central? It is in the eastern half of the country.

It may not make total geographic sense, but most people east of Manitoba would think of "eastern Canada" as referring to the Atlantic provinces.

For those who are interested, the census in Canada does have a question about knowledge of official languages, in addition to the one about native language, and the city of Montreal has some maps about it. If you click here (large pdf), and scroll down, you can find:

3.1 Concentration of persons whose only official language known is English
3.2 Concentration of persons whose only official language known is French
3.3 Concentration of persons knowing both official languages
3.4 Concentration of persons knowing neither of the two official languages

Note that the color increments aren't the same on each map.

This is what I was thinking when I saw the list.  On the other hand, all this damned snow here over the past several weeks has me dreaming about trekking a long way south...

Quebec City is a magical place. Pity that I don't speak but a few hundred words of broken French. So Toronto. But of course, Vancouver really. Unless it's Hudson, cold and snow really is not worth it. Smiley

hudson is the fugliest place in the world

You been to Hudson?

no, but I've been to a landfill.

Montreal or Toronto, went with Montreal because their hockey team is better.

Well in Toronto, Barrie is "Northern Ontario". It's all relative.

False.

I'm sure you can find people who would describe Muskoka and Parry Sound as "Northern Ontario", which Holmes here wouldn't like. But nobody thinks a place on the GO train is in Northern Ontario.

It's an exaggeration, really.

I've visited all of those cities and I like Quebec and Montreal better than the other two.  Between them I think I'd prefer living in Montreal, even though it's a bit sketchy and easily the most filthy of the four, just because there's more to do in terms of cultural enrichment and better public transit.

Quebec City. After four years of Japanese I feel like French really couldn't be all that hard to pick up by comparison.

Toronto. Montreal would be nice but my French is very bad so I'd struggle to get by in a majority francophone city.
