I think interns need to be compensated for their efforts, considering the increased expectations that students will have a number of such internships under their belt means long periods of time in the year where students are expected to work for nothing.

It's wrong.

However, I do think we can look at this differently ... I'll support the amendment, but I will propose my own to provide some flexibility to employers and interns, without ignoring that fundamental point that labor should be compensated.

AYE
I'm genuinely curious, I can"t wait for your proposal Tongue.

I move that the rules be suspended so that this bill is not tabled and we can continue to debate it.
Me too if this is not already clear Tongue.

I do hope a senator will ask the sponsorship of this bill!

I would be willing to sponsor it but I'm pretty sure I can't do that until after we've suspended the rules??
I think you can. The only rule that would have to be suspended would be the "the bill shall be withdrawn". Basically extending the time of the senators to ask for sponsorship for this bill.

Well, that's how I interpret the rules and what I would do if the senate decides to elect me as the speaker Tongue.

As I always said, I don't understand why anyone should be paid less than the minimum wage. That would be a violation of the idea of a minimum wage.

Like I've said, I fully support requiring private employers (like law firms) to pay the full minimum wage (in fact I've never heard of a law firm that does not compensate their student employees generously). But I know from experience that many of the unpaid internships I and friends had during college, where we were working for cash-strapped government offices or non-profit organizations, would simply not have existed at all if they had been required to pay us $15 an hour.
You really raise a good point Lief.

Hmmm, why not paying still paying them at the minimum wage ($15/hour), but the federal government subsidizes a part of it: like 33%???

Well,
To clarify my position: I'm against lowering the minimum wage for some workers because that would go after the the principle of the "minimum wage". I'm however not opposed to help companies in order to hire people who have a lower productivity: the interns, the young people,...

So I would definitely support "tax credits" for the companies that want to hire interns.

According to the senate rules, the bill should be withdrawn.

However, Article IX, Section 2 allows me that:

Dear god, that was Bore who was administering that and with all the messages and the suspension of the rules for the sponsorship, I totally forgot. My apology.
