Also Aasif Mandvi is hilarious but not in a host way. Remember whenever Stewart interviews his correspondents he usually plays the straight man and the correspondent is the crazy absurd one.

John Oliver. Don't get me wrong, his HBO gig is great, but the Daily Show will allow him to reach a much larger audience.

Actually, according to Wikipedia, HBO only put Oliver under contract for two seasons. If Stewart doesn't leave until December, Oliver can return to Comedy Central.

Oliver should stay at HBO, Last Week Tonight is great!

Jason Jones or that Jordan Klemper guy would be best replacements.  Schaal is painfully unfunny and would be the worst possible choice.  If Lewis Black's a good interviewer (which I doubt Sad ) then he'd be great.

How about Brian Williams?  He can be entertaining, he knows how to do fake reporting, and he may well be looking for a new job soon.

It's hard to imagine most of the current Daily Show correspondents as hosts. They play their characters so well that it's hard to imagine them playing the more serious role as host. (And I really can't see the Daily Show working with a Colbert-type character host.)

Personally, I would love to see Tina Fey as host. I've always loved her and thought she was one of the best ever on SNL. But, if they're going to pull from current talent, Samantha Bee could definitely be a fine choice, but I'd really like to see if she could pull off a more Jon Stewart-style of host. Either way, I think it's way past due for a woman to host one of the main late night comedy shows.

Yeah, it's actually a much more reliable news source than the main US news networks.

Jones, Bee, and about half of the other correspondents current and former would be great.

Honestly the only big worries I have is:

A) Keep as many of the current Daily Show writers as possible. Your host can be as funny as you want, but it won't be worth a damn if the jokes they are telling have no substance to begin with.

B) For the love of god, keep the current format and stay far away from the Host/Panel format that Real Time has and that The Minority Report has been using. It's so goddamn awful and I hate it in every show it's used on.

If the post-Stewart era doesn't do both these things then the new show will probably suck or at least massively disappoint. In which case Last Week Tonight becomes the de facto Daily Show successor, which I'm okay with.

Just cancel it. Last Week Tonight is a far funnier show nowadays anyway.

It's not "fake news". That's like The Onion. The Daily Show reports on actual real life stories.

Certain Onion stores seem to have been more real news than anything the main news sites report. This one is the most classic, but there are plenty of others.

The show was completely different with Craig Kilborn. It wasn't even a political satire show at all, it mostly just served as more of a parody of E!-style celebrity gossip shows, covering mostly that, and the correspondents covered those "weird news" stories local stations love to pick up on, rather than now which is mostly skewering right wing talking points. It wasn't really a political show until Bush took office.

And of course Kilborn's guests were always B or C-list celebrities. No one would've ever thought of him interviewing a presidential candidate or cabinet member.

Disagree with the assessment of Kilborn some have stated that he was a poor host. He was actually quite good, interviewed well, and had a huge hand in pulling the show out of the morass of Comedy Central also-rans into a truly huge tv force. Stewart was initially considered a weak replacement, ironically.the growth in quality of interview subjects had much more to do with the show's growth under Stewart over the years than any weakness of Kilborn's.

Incidentally, is there any actual serious buzz about Tina Fey as a potential replacement, or is this simply Atlas dreaming like the inclusion of Biden on the list? If so, sure she's got the fake news anchor thing down pat, but can she interview anywhere near as well as Stewart?

I saw her mentioned in a newspaper article listing some possible replacements.

Neither a dream, nor connected to Atlas. It is an obvious joke made several places.

I just found this, but I can't speak for its accuracy.

I wonder what a Daily Show with Jane Curtain would be like.
