That's the way to go. Hopefully Republicans won't continue to act like hypocritical, irresponsible obstructionists when the safety of the world is at stake.

No hypocrit here.  I absolutely support giving the President this approval.

However, something tells me the red avatars would be b*tching and moaning if this were a Republican President.

Not this one.

The decision was made by ISIS leaders... with war crimes with Americans as victims, and losing all semblance of trustworthiness.

Srsly can't we just keep it at bombing them only

Essentially, that's what this is.  It specifically does not allow ground combat operations, except rescues and special operations.

Unlike the 2003 invasion - which helped to create this mess in the first place - I believe that this has to be done.

One effect is to make any dealings with ISIS "trading with the enemy"... and participation by Americans in ISIS treasonable in law as well as morals.

As I understand it, Senate Republicans are more friendly to the White House's request than Senate Democrats. I can imagine that House Republicans would feel similarly, I hope.

I support the request, obviously. It's good to get a good authorization to take out ISIS.

The only way I'll support our forces going over and smashing ISIS to tiny little bits is a formal declaration of war. If you're gonna do it then do it the constituitional way.

How many Congressmen who voted against the other Iraq War in 2003 are still around?  Are any who voted against the War in 1991 still in office?

Anyone who votes against all is a true American statesman (or stateswoman).

In the Senate, Mikulski and Leahy are the two who have a chance to vote against a 3rd Iraq war.

This is hardly the same as the Gulf War and 2003 Invasion. We are dealing with an illegitimate "state" full of terrorists who want nothing more than to destroy the West. My only fear in attacking is that no matter how hard we try, there will always be a powerful terrorist group. Even if we obliterate the Islamic State, there is still Boko Haram, al-Shabaab, etc. But I do know that we cannot sit around waiting for them to attack us.

ISIS is not a government recognized by the United States.

Then we issue letters of marque and reprisal which is a constituitional method.

Did you know that the year is 2015, and not 1815?

I don't think you know what a letter of marque is.

That's basically a license given to someone by a government to be a privateer.  A privateer is a pirate who has the authorization of a government to commit acts of piracy against a foreign country.

I don't know if you're aware, but ISIS doesn't exactly have much of a presence on the high seas.  But, sure, if they start sending galleons of precious booty to across the ocean, maybe we could try that.  Or, use the Navy which we spend billions and billions of dollars on.  Just a thought.

I think the problem is that crazy libertarian Ron Paul types think that a "Declaration of War" is the threshold for any military action by the United States.  That's a very tenuous notion.
