It's a bit early to declare (three years is a bit much) but best of luck to him.

Glad to hear. A Newsom-Harris primary was not going to be great for the State Democratic Party.

I'm curious if he is still opposed to High Speed Rail, and thus implicitly in favor of promoting the states transportation problems via wider freeways

I'm very sure there was a bigger deal behind the scenes between the two. Harris probably preffered the Senate while Newsom wants to stay in the executive branch.

I thought Harris also wanted to go for Governor, but her hand was forced when Newsom ruled out running for Senate?

Rip California, here comes West Coast Cuomo.

I don't think it'll be like that. Jerry Brown is fiscally in the center, and Newsom lands in the same area. Newsom is further to the left on social and environmental issues, so he should be able to keep the progressive base satisfied, unlike Cuomo.

California needs a governor that can steer the legislature (which can 0 to 100 on spending real quick) at bay.

I'm not voting for a HSR opponent.
Also, declaring almost 4 years in advance? Wow.

I'm still disappointed in Newsom's stance on High Speed Rail, but I would appreciate someone who can control the legislature's excesses like Brown can. I'm still holding out for John Chiang to announce at some point.

I think that many Californians could have told you that he was running in 2018 as far back as 2010 when he dropped out of the Governor's race and went for Lt Gov instead.

His stance on marijuana is... welcoming, to say the least. Not that huge on his opposition to high speed rail, but his fight against the War on Drugs gives me hope.
