What's wrong with Flower of Scotland? It's a beautiful song. I think it might insult Denmark though, so maybe that's why?

Scotland the Brave is also very fitting, but they've seemed to use Flower of Scotland at most sporting events, so it feels like a better anthem.

It is neither a good tune, nor good lyrics and both the two Rabbie Burns' songs and Hamish Henderson's Freedom Come All Ye are far superior options IMO.

Given that we didn't 'rise and be a nation again' I would prefer Freedom Come All Ye, but people aren't familiar with the tune or the words.

I like 'A Man's a Man' but it's a universal song, not a national one.

None of the above.

I like highland cathedral as a tune but the words are rubbish, scots wha hae is all about something that happened 700 years ago, flower of scotland is as well, but has an awful tune as well, scotland the brave is quite a nice tune but not the type you want for a national anthem, a man's a man could be about anywhere (which is kind of it's point) and freedom come all ye (which I had never heard of before this) is set in a very particular time and place.

Maybe writing new words to a tune like ye banks and braes or something?

Scotland the brave is quite a nice tune but not the type you want for a national anthem.

Why not? What sort of tunes do you find appropriate?

Ideally some post-hardcore or (real) emo song.

Scotland the brave is quite a nice tune but not the type you want for a national anthem.

Why not? What sort of tunes do you find appropriate?

A few reasons:

1. Scotland the Brave is fast. Really really fast. It is difficult to fit any words to it and even if you succeed it will be difficult for people to sing them, and national anthems should be fairly easy for even the unmusical to sing.

2. It's very very upbeat. A national anthem should be able to sound solemn.

3. It's basically designed to be played on either the bagpipes or the fiddle, ideally a national anthem would be able to played on most orchestral instruments.

4. The only time I've ever heard anyone play it is at ceilidh's or as something that plays electronically if you push the button of a cuddly bagpipe toy or nessie.

I like Will Ye No Come Back Again. If it is too Jacobite, new words could be written, or it could perhaps be excised in the style of the German national anthem.

We Mormons have managed to get lyrics for that tune just fine thank you very much.  No problems whatsoever. It can be done just fine.

Actually I've heard more than my fair share of creative lyrics put into that have been manageable

So yeah, it's doable.

But Cliff Hanley did write lyrics to it - when you talk about Scotland the Brave most people would consider those as an integral part of the song.

other:  the one that says "Well I will walk five hundred miles and I will walk five hundred more, just to be the man who walks five hundred miles before his feet gets sore."   Or something like that.  Ever heard that song?  Those guys sound more Scottish than any other band I can think of.  Plus, the marching beat of the song really has a national anthem feel.

Ah, Texasgurl beat me to it.

Seriously, though, nothing says Scots national anthem quite as much as that song.

I was going to say Auld Lang Syne but 500 Miles by the Proclaimers is an even better choice
