http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/02/14/in-close-vote-utah-house-oks-firing-squad-proposal/

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted 39-34 Friday morning to approve the measure, sending it to an uncertain fate in the state's GOP-controlled Senate. Leaders in that chamber have thus far declined to say if they'll support it, and Utah's Republican Gov. Gary Herbert won't say if he'll sign it.

Senate President Wayne Niederhauser, a Republican from Sandy, again declined to tell reporters on Friday if he'd support it.

they should use opiates for lethal injection.  shoot 3 grams of heroin into a dude.

anyway, "humane" or not, the real issue is that it's messier.  rational or not, a bloodied, disfigured corpse stands against the narrative of moral progress.

Not a bad move if we're gonna have executions.

I haven't heard much about this bill, and I don't know if Utahns actually want to bring the firing squad back. They tend to trust their legislators on most issues though. Very trusting of local authority.

Great news! It is both more humane and much harder for foreign powers to interfere with than lethal injection.

I think an even more effective execution(and deterrent method) would be the guillotine.

That's always freaked me out due to the idea of the head possibly remaining conscious for a good 6 or 7 seconds afterwards and being able to see that its just a head

Because regardless of anyone's position on capital punishment, (I think) we can all agree that it's better to be more humane than less humane?

Far more humane than the lethal injection. Death comes pretty fast. It's also fairly painless if you do it right.

This is a really important caveat. Is everyone in this thread just taking it on intuition that a firing squad is more humane, or what? I'd need to see some data indicating that firing squads don't have a much higher error rate than lethal injection before I could jump on that bandwagon.

Don't really get the whole "more humane" angle here. Don't you want criminals to be punished? The humane option would be to not kill them. IMO you can't have your capital punishment cake and it eat it too.

Why assume that it would be "done right"? That's at odds with the frequent mistakes that American executioners make while using other methods to kill people.

Well I'm assuming the firing squad will be made of people with military training, or another type of background that entails learning to shoot straight.

Why is stuff like this important for Republicans to spend their time on?  You talk about things that can go wrong with lethal injection?  People can and do writhe in pain after being shot.  Are we guaranteeing a head shot here?  There are reasons we went away from firing squads.  It's just another instance of the GOP being obsessed with debating things we've already settled.

It's Utah, we're a one-party state, they have nothing better to do.
