At the Whig National Convention in 1840, Henry Clay was offered the vice presidency under William H. Harrison, but turned it down. The spot instead went to John Tyler, who became president when Harrison died a month into his term.

What would have happen if Clay had accepted the offer? Some points to consider:

  • Does the U.S. still annex Texas and, if so, when? Without presidential sponsorship, is it possible that this opportunity dies out as Texans loose interest in the 1840s?
  • Do the Whigs become a legitimate political force, rather than simply a catch-all for non-Democrats?
  • Assuming Clay seeks reelection, what does the 1844 campaign look like?

Discuss.
