I've actually heard someone call it as so.

But of course no. It helps society by bringing light to progressive causes.

I think me and BRTD are literally the only two people on this forum who like Upworthy. It's really weird.

Why? We're both liberal progressive SJWs.

I don't care about it, but your thread's title is not Upworthy-worthy.

Part of the reason I'm in the minority is I actually like Upworthy's headlines. They're kind of fun to guess what the story is about, and intrigue you without early "spoilers". Also I don't consider it clickbait. It has no advertising on the site at all. I think of clickbait as those sites that force you to click through one bit for every piece in a 30 item list and then are loaded with all those "Make thousands in the stock market with four unknown secrets!" or "See how this 54 year old grandmother looks 33!" ads. For the same reason I think Buzzfeed gets too much flack, while they like lists, they put all the items on one page.

I literally don't understand why anyone would "like" Upworthy. It's the death of civilisation.

It's only dangerous if people use it as a legitimate news source. Clickhole does Upworthy better than Upworthy does.

Yes, the headlines are pretty annoying, and sometimes you click and feel like you've been tricked or manipulated. But most of the time their posts are pretty informative and make a genuinely good point (not a Clickhole-ish "good point").

What? Their headlines are the best part. Unlike most sites they don't give you a "spoiler" right in the headline.

You don't need "spoilers" in a news/social commentary website. I want to know what the hell I'm going to read, or at the very least what it's going to talk about. Otherwise I often end up having wasted 5 minutes on my time.

At least now they've finally gotten around to summarizing the contents of their videos in a "written sentences+GIF" formula. I almost always read only those and don't watch the video, it's much more time-efficient.

This is a more accurate parody of their style, though I still don't like it because I don't like things that make fun of things I like.

People who complain about "clickbait" are just ignorant of how journalism has always worked. Only a tiny minority of people care about substantive, "quality" journalism; this has always been financially supported either by rich benefactors (which introduces its own problems) or financially-lucrative and/or popular fluff (like obits, syndicated comics, classifieds, etc.). Or you've got things like NPR that are viewer-supported. And like BRTD astutely pointed out, the "clickbait" on Upworthy or Buzzfeed is not at all worthy of the scorn it gets. The lists are always on one page, so there's really only one "click." And as far as Buzzfeed and Vox go (I don't really read Upworthy so I can't speak for them), the "clickbait" articles support a lot of good, more substantive writing.

Here's a pretty decent summary of how "clickbait" has always been part of journalism: http://io9.com/a-history-of-clickbait-the-first-100-years-1530683235

It's not a good sign if the "defense" of a practice is that it is similar to early 20th-century yellow journalism.

Usually a sign of insecure or shallow belief
