Ike was strange one. He acted as a gap between the more liberal Northern candidates like Dewey, and the more conservative Taft.

However by modern standards he improved cold war relations, gave massive federal support for infrastructure, enforced civil rights with troops, signed the 1957 civil rights bill and warned us that the Military have too much influence etc

Depends on the context.  For instance, saying "even Alexander Hamilton was in favor of high tariffs!" is a very dumb and ill-educated talking point from a member of a steel workers union.  However, a liberal Democrat saying something to the effect of "if you are so anti-immigration why did you vote for John McCain?" makes a little bit of sense.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it depends on the context of the time(s).

This is particularly egregious when the Hero in question died a long time ago, and their quotes are used to debate an issue that has evolved greatly since then.

Since you capitalized hero, I take it you're talking about Jesus?
