What is a swing state? I read several definitions in this forum.

In this topic, swing state is defined as the states where the margin was close to zero.
But some other threads consider swing state the state where the margin is close to the national margin. And someone considered that swing state is the one that the candidates needs in order to reach 270 EVs.

For example:
In 2012, according to the first definition, the swing state was Florida, because it was the one where the margin was the smallest one.
But Virginia was the state where Obama's margin was the closest to the national margin, almost equal.
And Pennsylvania was the state that Obama needed in order to have more than 270 EVs. Even if he had lost Virginia, Ohio and Florida, where the margins where smaller than they were in Pennylvania, Obama would have won the EC.

Many definitions

And many words: swing state, battleground state, toss-up state, purple state... I need a dictionary.

Rhode Island was considered a swing state in 1972, actually.
