The GOP donor base would never let an economic moderate be elected, let alone someone to the left of the democrat on economics.

Assuming both have non-nutty personalities, this is how I think the states would line up in a pure libertarian vs. populist sense.  The libertarian is yellow and the populist is green:

The major uncertainty is with black, Mormon and Hispanic voters.  I am assuming the Libertarian is pro-immigration reform and the populist against it.

Well yeah, but it's not like Dems would nominate a SoCon either.

Keep in mind that partisan blinders will probably make some states which "should" flip stick with their party anyway.

And just for the heck of it, here's how I think it would look if it was was the other way around. (i.e. economically left-wing Republican/economically right-wing Democrat)

Immediately thought of the 1976 map. Although it is slightly off that one (changing demographics), here's my go at it.

I think Fiscal Conservative has an advantage over Fiscal Liberal. Only reason republicans are struggling is their Extreme Social Conservative

Pretty much an amalgam of the 1896-1908, 1920-1928, 1948, 1960, and 1976 maps. Nowadays most people (except the very poor) don't vote on economic issues; they vote on social issues.
