Scenario: 2032. Incumbent Senator Poliquin (placeholder of course) retires. State Senator me (R), having been in the legislature for a while and receiving the endorsements of the elderly King, Collins, and Snowe, receives the Republican nomination. My record is moderate like them with a libertarian streak. Key points are that I favor gun rights, abortion, and fully support gay rights and green energy, among other views that you all know. Assume an unpopular Democratic president. Do I win?

In ME likely no.

Yes. Maine loves their moderate Republicans, and they're the most independent voters in the nation. However, are you really thinking about perusing this?

That's going to be like supporting desegregation in the late 80s, haha! Issues will change.

But you could - if you make befriend the right people, especially on the opposite side of the aisle. The bipartisan image will be critical.

Exactly. It's what causes The Sisters and King to continually crush their opponents, am I right?

No, because Scott Brown will carpetbag to Maine before you and lose in embarrassing fashion. Tongue

In all honestly though, I think you could. It's one of the most elastic states and you have the benefit of those huge endorsements and moderate views. Although it might also depend on who the Maine Democratic nominee is.

How the heck did Bruce Poliquin of all people become a Senator though? Huh

Poliquin is a placeholder name. This scenario assumes a Generic D a la Troy Jackson

Most likely - yes. Nothing in your platform looks as going against main Maine principles...

Well, it sounds like you'd have Rockefeller GOP's vote at the very least. Wink

And a LOT of Indie vote too. And Indies are, generally, beloved in Maine...

Pleasant though it might be to fantasize, I rather doubt many of us here on the Atlas Forum will go on to careers in politics.

Your atlas posting history can and should be used against you by your opponent

In b4 Rockefeller "Maine is truly Republican so yes."

In reality, it has a lot to do with the election year, the opponent, and how you present yourself to the other side. Rauner won in Illinois because Democrats in the suburbs voted for him. Hands down. That's a lot harder to do in Illinois than Maine (Maine has that independent streak), but still something that needs to be a focus. And that means not presenting yourself as too fiscally conservative.

Heaven knows what the hell the political climate is going to be in 2032 let alone what it will be in Maine. All I know is that I hope to Christ you never win any election that's not some obscure statehouse race.

Can we stop this weird thing where forum users talk about their political career paths? It's just odd and a bit embarrassing.
