I don't care either way (voted FF because Zapata himself was alright), but what's up with Subcomandante Marcos? When I left for my mission on May 2 he was this mysterious, elusive figure, and now Wikipedia says he was a hologram? What the heck?

A metaphorical hologram. The Zapatistas decided to 'retire' the personality a few weeks after you left because they thought it had become a distraction.

But not before writing a children's book!

So there was no Subcomandante Marcos? Just a collective acting in the name of one person??

There might have been a specific 'actor' 'playing' him but basically, yeah.
