The voting age and the age of majority should be the same number. I'm fine with 18 because it corresponds to all the other icons of adulthood. In countries where people reach majority in other respects faster, maybe younger. Bolivia's basically the child labor capital of the Western Hemisphere, I wouldn't blink if they lowered their age to 15 or 16.

16, but I've (somewhat jokingly) suggested that an awareness test be given to all potential voters. That way we don't have people voting who actually think that God hates gay people or something.

I know way to many stupid, immature sixteen-year-olds to support blanket suffrage starting at this age; however, I might support allowing sixteen-year-olds who earn enough to pay income tax the right to vote, since I oppose taxation without representation.

18 is fine. 16 is still a bit too young in my opinion, but I don't really care one way or the other.

why is income tax the only tax that counts?  everybody pays sales taxes.

Hell, I earned $30k last year, and my effective income tax rate and the sales tax in my jurisdiction were almost equal.

There are plenty of stupid, immature eighteen-year-olds too.

18 seems right in my opinion, if you're old enough to buy/rent R-rated material, drink alcohol and use tobacco products, you're old enough to vote.

15-16. That's roughly about the age where teens take a government/poli. sci. class in high school, and start becoming more interested in the Presidency, the voting process and constitutions. And with knowledge of that basic stuff comes interest in the actual candidates, campaigns and parties.

Besides, it's young up and coming voters like them who are some of the most progressive-minded. The more Democrats, the better!

What about states where there is no income tax? (And one of them is the all-important Florida)

18. From what I can tell in Australia 16 seems too young, though perhaps civic engagement in the States is stronger among youth.....

I tend to agree with Mikado, though I am open to being convinced.

Any age you pick is going to be arbitrary, so why not allow minors to vote if they pass some sort of citizenship test? Once you hit 18 or graduate from High School or something, you wouldn't need to pass the test.

As old as practically possible at all times, which in this context would mean 21.
