After a deadlocked convention, Senator Bentsen came out the winner, and in a nod to Senator McGovern chose the up and coming Senator Gary Hart. Reagan and Brooke came out strong in the debates and had a united party behind them, but after 3 terms of Republicans and a downturn in the economy, the race still slightly favored the democrats. This election would be a turning point.

Shouldn't there be some liberal third-party option? John Anderson/Jerry Brown, etc. would've definitely had an opening in this race.

In this case the Hart pick for VP disarrayed who was going to run as an independent.
